Turn PFAS-Impacted Asphalt & Concrete into a Valuable Resource

RemRAP™ is a patented treatment process designed to help organizations manage PFAS-impacted Recycled Asphalt Pavement (RAP) and other granular materials while supporting beneficial reuse opportunities. Instead of stockpiling or disposing of impacted material, RemRAP helps immobilize PFAS within the recycled material so it can be incorporated into new infrastructure projects.

RemRAP combines specialized sorbent technology with foamed bitumen construction methods to reduce PFAS leaching potential, support circular material use, and minimize reliance on virgin aggregate resources.

Across the world, PFAS-impacted asphalt and construction materials are frequently stockpiled while organizations evaluate management options. Materials that were once considered highly recyclable can become difficult and expensive to manage when PFAS concerns enter the equation.

Traditional approaches often lead to long-term stockpiling, transportation, disposal costs, and increased demand for virgin materials. RemRAP was developed to provide an alternative approach focused on immobilizing PFAS within recycled asphalt materials while supporting continued beneficial use.

What Is RemRAP™?

RemRAP is a patented treatment process developed through a collaboration between RemBind and Fulton Hogan that combines PFAS immobilization technology with asphalt construction practices. The process is designed for use with recycled asphalt pavement and other granular materials impacted by PFAS contamination.

The technology uses specialized sorbent blends and foamed bitumen processes to help manage PFAS risks while maximizing the reuse potential of recycled materials.

Rather than treating PFAS as a disposal problem, RemRAP is intended to support a circular approach where materials remain in productive use.

How RemRAP™ Works

Four-step diagram: untreated PFAS-impacted RAP; RAP coated in RemRAP treatment materials that immobilize PFAS; treated material enveloped in foamed bitumen; and the foamed bitumen base placed below a low-permeability wearing course.

Step 1: Treat PFAS-Impacted RAP

PFAS-impacted recycled asphalt pavement is combined with RemRAP treatment materials designed to immobilize contaminants.

Step 2: Encapsulate Within Foamed Bitumen

The treated material is incorporated into a foamed bitumen process. The bitumen helps retain the treatment system within the recycled material while providing additional water resistance and PFAS management benefits.

Step 3: Incorporate into Pavement Construction

The resulting foamed bitumen base is installed beneath a low-permeability wearing course that further protects the treated material and limits environmental exposure.

Step 4: Support Long-Term Material Reuse

The treated material remains part of an active infrastructure asset rather than becoming a disposal liability. At the end of service life, material may be recovered and incorporated into future projects.

PFAS-Impacted RAP Can Be Reused, Recovered and Reapplied

Research and Development

Bench-scale testing conducted in collaboration with RemBind and Fulton Hogan evaluated RemRAP as a PFAS immobilization system for recycled asphalt pavement. The research demonstrated substantial reductions in PFAS leachability while maintaining the functional characteristics necessary for infrastructure applications.

Laboratory testing reported PFAS removal efficiencies ranging from approximately 97% to greater than 99% during various testing phases, while candidate formulations demonstrated immobilization performance exceeding binder-only controls.
