Safety & Handling Best Practices for Permanganate Applications

February 20, 2026

Permanganate is widely used across municipal and industrial water treatment applications due to its strong oxidizing capabilities and proven performance in processes such as taste and odor control, iron and manganese removal, and remediation. At Carus, we offer CAIROX® potassium permanganate and CARUSOL® sodium permanganate for water treatment and RemOx® S ISCO reagent and RemOx® L ISCO reagent for soil and groundwater remediation — providing flexible solutions to meet diverse operational needs.

However, like any powerful oxidant, permanganate must be handled, stored, and applied with care to ensure safe operations and regulatory compliance. Understanding the differences between product forms, proper safety protocols, and response procedures is essential for protecting personnel, equipment, and facilities.

Understanding Permanganate Products in the Field

Permanganate is most commonly supplied in two forms:

  • Potassium permanganate (solid)
  • Sodium permanganate (liquid)

Each form offers operational advantages depending on site needs, feed systems, and application goals. Regardless of form, proper training and handling practices are critical to safe implementation.

Key Safety Considerations

When working with permanganate products, facilities should have clear procedures in place for:

  • Safe storage and segregation from incompatible materials
  • Proper personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements
  • Routine handling and transfer protocols
  • Spill response, cleanup, and neutralization methods
  • Disposal practices aligned with site and regulatory requirements

Establishing these safeguards helps minimize risk and supports long-term operational reliability.

On-Demand Webinar: Safety & Handling of Permanganate

To support water and wastewater professionals, Carus has made its technical webinar “Safety & Handling of Permanganate” available on demand.

Presented by Carus expert Darin Skutt, the session provides practical guidance for safely managing both potassium and sodium permanganate in real-world operational environments.
