CARULITE® 500 Catalyst: Sterilization Safety and Ethylene Oxide Emission Control

July 1, 2025

Ethylene oxide (EtO) is widely used to sterilize medical devices and equipment that can’t tolerate high temperatures or moisture. While highly effective as a sterilant, EtO is also classified as a carcinogen and must be tightly controlled to protect public health and comply with evolving environmental regulations. In response, hospitals, laboratories, and sterilization service providers are seeking reliable, efficient technologies to help reduce EtO emissions and support air quality standards.

Meet CARULITE® 500 Catalyst

CARULITE® 500 Catalyst is a specialized catalyst developed by Carus to help address ethylene oxide emissions in exhaust air streams. Used within recuperative catalytic oxidizer systems, it facilitates the conversion of EtO into carbon dioxide and water vapor at temperatures around 150°C. This supports efforts to reduce the presence of hazardous gases and aligns with sustainability and air quality goals.

How It Works

In a properly designed oxidizer unit, CARULITE® 500 catalyst initiates a catalytic reaction that breaks down ethylene oxide molecules into safer byproducts—namely carbon dioxide and water vapor. This process occurs efficiently at moderate operating temperatures, making it both effective and energy-conscious. The catalyst’s stability and longevity make it well-suited for continuous use in healthcare and industrial sterilization environments.

Applications and Integration

  • Medical device manufacturing and packaging
  • Hospital and clinical sterilization departments
  • Contract sterilization facilities
  • Pharmaceutical production and research labs

These operations benefit from integrating CARULITE® 500 into their emission control strategies to better manage EtO output while maintaining throughput and compliance goals.

Supporting Compliance and Community Confidence

CARULITE® 500 catalyst supports broader emission control strategies designed to help facilities meet ethylene oxide guidelines established by the U.S. EPA and other regulatory agencies. Its role in improving air treatment outcomes also reinforces a facility’s commitment to environmental responsibility and strengthening public trust.

Cleaner Air, Safer Processes

CARULITE® 500 catalyst is part of a comprehensive solution to reducing sterilization-related emissions. When paired with a properly engineered system, it offers a dependable path to safer, cleaner air.
