RemBind® Well Socks

Simple PFAS Treatment for Existing Groundwater Wells

Simple PFAS Treatment for Existing Groundwater Wells

RemBind® Well Socks provide a practical approach for reducing PFAS concentrations in groundwater using existing monitoring and remediation wells. Filled with RemBind® sorbent technology and installed directly within a well, Well Socks capture PFAS as groundwater moves through the treatment zone, helping remove PFAS mass from the groundwater system.

Unlike many groundwater treatment approaches, RemBind Well Socks can be deployed without major site construction, injection activities, excavation, or additional treatment infrastructure. Once the treatment media reaches capacity, the socks are removed and replaced as needed.

Four-step overview of RemBind Well Socks: groundwater flow through the well, well sock installed in the treatment interval, PFAS captured as groundwater passes through, and the sock removed and replaced when saturated. PFAS treatment directly within the well, no pumping required.

Groundwater PFAS Management Explained

PFAS contamination frequently occurs within groundwater systems impacted by industrial operations, airports, fire training facilities, military sites, landfills, and other historic uses of PFAS-containing materials. Once contamination enters an aquifer, PFAS can migrate with groundwater flow, creating long-term environmental and regulatory challenges.

Traditional groundwater remediation approaches often require significant infrastructure investments, pumping systems, treatment equipment, or long-term management programs. RemBind Well Socks provide a complementary treatment approach that utilizes existing well infrastructure to help remove PFAS mass from groundwater.

What Are RemBind® Well Socks?

RemBind Well Socks consist of a durable nylon outer sock filled with RemBind reagent, a sorbent material engineered to bind PFAS compounds. The socks are placed within groundwater wells where they remain submerged in the treatment interval. As groundwater moves through the well, PFAS compounds are captured by the sorbent media. Once capacity is reached, the socks can be removed and replaced.

The technology is designed to:

  • Utilize existing monitoring wells
  • Target PFAS-contaminated groundwater
  • Remove PFAS mass from groundwater systems
  • Minimize infrastructure requirements
  • Support long-term groundwater management programs

How RemBind® Well Socks Work

Step 1: Evaluate Existing Wells

Groundwater data and well construction details are reviewed to identify suitable treatment locations.

Step 2: Prepare the Well Socks

The required number of Well Socks is selected based on well depth and treatment interval. The socks are primed with water and connected into a treatment chain.

Step 3: Install Into the Well

The sock chain is lowered into the well and secured at the wellhead. Groundwater then flows through the treatment media during normal well operation.

Step 4: Capture PFAS

The RemBind reagent binds PFAS compounds within the groundwater as water passes through the treatment media.

Step 5: Remove and Replace

Once performance monitoring indicates the media has reached capacity, the socks are removed and replaced as part of ongoing groundwater management activities.

Key Benefits

Uses Existing Infrastructure

Can often be deployed within existing monitoring and remediation wells without significant site modifications.

Easy Installation

Designed for straightforward installation and retrieval using simple field procedures.

Removes PFAS Mass

Captures PFAS compounds within the treatment media, allowing contaminant mass to be removed from the groundwater system when the socks are retrieved.

Minimal Site Disruption

No excavation, major construction, or groundwater extraction systems are required for deployment.

Scalable Deployment

Can be used in individual wells or across larger monitoring networks.

Cost-Effective Groundwater Management

Provides an alternative treatment option that can complement broader remediation programs.

Applications

Airport PFAS Remediation

Support groundwater treatment efforts associated with AFFF impacts and other PFAS-related contamination.

Military Installations

Help address PFAS contamination in groundwater monitoring and management programs.

Industrial Facilities

Deploy within existing well networks at active or former industrial sites.

Landfills

Support groundwater monitoring and treatment activities where PFAS migration is being managed.

Fire Training Facilities

Provide an additional tool for groundwater management at sites with historic PFAS releases.

Product Specifications

RemBind Well Socks are available in configurations for both 2-inch and 4-inch wells and utilize a nylon outer sock filled with proprietary RemBind reagent technology. The treatment media has been independently evaluated for PFAS sorption performance using PFAS-contaminated groundwater.

The full technical specification sheet, including dimensional detail, is being prepared and will be available soon.
